MEN

Mount Union 73, Westminster 53

ALLIANCE — The Purple Raiders (1-0) went scoreless the first 6:30 of the game, but used a a 16-6 surge midway through the first half to take a 24-13 lead and control of the game. Sophomore Jimmy Wood scored a career-high 18 points, Dave Pellerite had 17 points and Hodkinson had 12 to lead Mount Union. Westminster (0-1) was led by Max Spinner with 16 points.

Penn State Altoona 61, Grove City 59

ALTOONA, Pa. — Penn State Altoona’s Zach Spitz hit four free throws in the closing moments to seal the win. Andy O’Keefe and sophomore forward Drew Vandermeer both fired in 15 points for Grove City (0-1) while sophomore guard Brett Matson added 13 points. Junior Luke Tomaselli grabbed a team-high six boards for the Wolverines. Spitz led Altoona with 17 points while Kirk Peters added 16 points.

WOMEN

Seton Hill 74, Slippery Rock 59

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Jordan Burkes scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures for Seton Hill (1-0), which made 49 percent from the field. Julie Molloy scored 18 points and Nikki Presto had 15 for Slippery Rock (0-2).

Bluffton 79, Hiram 67

BLUFFTON — Ginny Buckingham and Kim Miller each had double-doubles to lead Bluffton (1-0). Miller scored 18 points with 12 rebounds and seven assists and Buckingham had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Bluffton, which shot 58 percent for the game. Alex Dellas scored 12 points and Jess Cowan had 11 points and six rebounds for Hiram (0-2), which shot just 40 percent from the field.
