Penn State: Backup tailback Brandon Beachum will miss the rest of the year because of a right knee injury. The team doctor said Monday the sophomore will have surgery Wednesday and faces nine months of rehab after tearing his ACL during a kickoff return last week against Indiana. Beachum, a Mooney High graduate, played in all 11 games this season, running for 113 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. He was carrying the ball more in recent weeks because of a right ankle injury to second-stringer Stephfon Green. Also hurt Saturday were receiver Chaz Powell (right shoulder) and cornerback A.J. Wallace, who suffered an apparent head injury. It is unclear if they will be ready to play when No. 13 Penn State visits Michigan State this weekend.

Arizona: With three games to go in the regular season, Arizona has reached a crossroads. The Wildcats have a chance to make history — or repeat it. Three wins would clinch Arizona’s first Rose Bowl berth. The Wildcats (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10) and Ducks (8-2, 6-1) are the only teams that control their own destinies in the jumbled Pac-10 race. “We know we’ve got to win to stay in the big picture,” Arizona coach Mike Stoops (Mooney High) said Monday at his weekly campus news conference. “There’s a lot of football to be played, but pretty much it’ll be over if we don’t win on Saturday.”
