A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard:

GIRARD

May 24

Burglary: To an apartment in the 10 block of East Liberty Street.

Domestic violence: Officers took a boy to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center in Youngstown after his sister, of East Liberty Street, alleged the boy had choked her and broken some of her fingernails during an argument.

Criminal mischief: A vehicle’s driver’s-side window was broken in the 200 block of East Howard Street, resulting in a $200 damage estimate.

May 25

Theft: A stereo/compact-disc player and roughly 50 CDs were stolen from a vehicle in the 1200 block of South State Street.

Menacing: Two Girard residents reported getting threatening text messages from a man, on one of which he said he had a gun.

Theft: A stereo was removed from a car on West Wilson Avenue.

Assault: A woman alleged a man pushed her by both arms onto a couch during an argument at a Park Avenue apartment.

Theft: A Joan Avenue woman’s debit card was missing, and she learned her account had been overdrawn $300.

Theft: Someone took flowers from a grave site at a cemetery off U.S. Route 422.

May 26

Arrests: Officers arrested two men in a wooded area near state Route 711 on charges of discharging a firearm within city limits and using a weapon while intoxicated. Both admitted having used a 20-gauge weapon for target practice, even though it was illegal, a report said.

Assault: Authorities responded to a fight in the 100 block of East Liberty Street and were met by two males with bloody noses and minor scrapes to the arms, face and neck.

Theft by deception: A Girard woman reported having received a letter from a Canadian online gaming company claiming she had won a contest. A $1,400 check sent to her proved to be fraudulent, a report showed.

May 27

Breaking and entering: A wooden board was removed from a window to a residence in the 300 block of Ohio Avenue, though it was unknown if anything had been taken.

Menacing: Two people on East Liberty Street told police a man with a brick threatened to break their vehicles’ windows.

LIBERTY

May 24

Vandalism: Someone poured paint over a vehicle in the 4700 block of Fifth Avenue, causing around $2,500 worth of damage.

Drugs: A Youngstown boy, 14, was charged with drug abuse during a traffic stop near Trumbull and Hadley avenues when, police said, a canine found what turned out to be a small quantity of suspected marijuana in a bag as well as in a paper towel.

Drugs: Authorities responded to a possible overdose at a Belmont Avenue motel, where they charged a Columbiana woman and a Girard man, both 26, with drug abuse and possession of drug-abuse instruments. Found were two syringes with suspected heroin and a spoon with drug residue, a report showed.

Theft: A Warren boy, 17, and a Niles man, 20, were charged in the theft of several bottles of alcohol from Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Ave. The teen also faced a charge of underage purchase or consumption of an alcoholic beverage.

Assault: A Holly Drive woman said a neighbor entered her apartment and struck the accuser in the face.

May 25

Theft: A Hadley Avenue man discovered $100 missing from his coat pocket.

Counterfeit: A clerk at a state Route 193 gas station received a fake $50 bill.

Criminal damaging: A blunt object, possibly a baseball bat, was used to break a vehicle’s window in the 1900 block of Twin Oak Drive.

Burglary: To a garage in the 4700 block of Vienna Avenue. An item was removed from a storage cabinet.

Theft: A $2,000 travel trailer was taken from a yard in the 500 block of East Liberty Street.

Criminal damaging: A key was used to cause $400 worth of damage to a vehicle’s finish on East Drive.

Theft/criminal damaging: A woman in the 4200 block of Logan Gate Road discovered a broken car window and her purse missing.

Aggravated menacing: An employee with a Belmont Avenue store told police her former boyfriend made six unwanted calls while she worked, threatening at one point to kill her.

May 26

Arrest: A Youngstown man, 40, was picked up in the 2700 block of Belmont Avenue on charges of criminal trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia when, police said, he was panhandling on property he had been warned several times to stay off. The man also was wanted on a probation-violation charge.

Drugs: A police dog conducted a sweep through Liberty High School, 1 Leopard Way, and detected a suspicious substance in a vehicle. An 18-year-old student was cited on a drug-abuse count when a small bag of suspected marijuana was discovered, a report said.

Domestic violence: A 29-year-old man and a woman, 21, were arrested at their township apartment and charged. The man alleged the woman slapped, punched and kicked him; the woman told police he pulled her hair and tossed her to the ground.

Misuse of a credit card: A township woman accused a family member of using her debit card without permission at numerous area locations.

Theft: A man’s bag containing various medications was missing after he patronized a Church Hill-Hubbard Road gas station.

Bad checks: A worker for Liberty Mini Mart, 3007 Belmont Ave., reported cashing two payroll checks totaling $514 and later learning there were insufficient funds to cover them.

HUBBARD

May 23

Arrest: A man being released from the Portage County Jail was wanted on a warrant from the city charging him with failure to report an accident.

Criminal damaging: A car sustained damage in the 100 block of Hillview Drive.

May 24

Criminal mischief: Eggs were thrown at a car in the 600 block of West Liberty Street.

May 25

Criminal damaging: A rock was used to smash a car’s window in the 100 block of Youngstown-Hubbard Road.

Theft: Police received a report of property having been stolen from a park in the 200 block of Roosevelt Drive.

May 26

Theft: A global positioning system unit was taken from a car in the 50 block of Fifth Avenue.

Attempted theft: Someone tried to enter a vehicle in the 300 block of Stewart Avenue, prompting the owner to give chase.

Fraud: A West Liberty Street woman reported being the victim of a possible phone scam.
