“The 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee” (8 p.m., ABC): Check out some brainy kids who know all about the ABCs of winning. Nearly 300 wordsmiths, age 9 to 15, will gather in Washington, D.C., for the 82nd annual event hosted by Tom Bergeron (”Dancing With the Stars”). They’ll go toe-to-toe and letter-for-letter as they break down really hard words and make the rest of us feel dumb. Coverage of the semifinal rounds can be seen earlier in the day on ESPN.

“The Oprah Effect” (9 p.m., CNBC): “The Oprah Effect” is a news special that examines Oprah Winfrey’s remarkable ability to transform companies from no names to brand names with a mere mention on her revered talk show. Now, that’s power. Carl Quintanilla hosts.
