Cruise In, appraisals

MERCER, Pa. — McCandless Ford, 8416 Sharon-Mercer Road, will be the setting from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday for a cruise in and antique appraisal. There will also be a 50-50 drawing, Chinese auction, raffle, music and food.

Terry Reeher, antique dealer, will conduct the appraisals. The cost for appraising three items will be $5, and proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s 24-hour Relay for Life on June 20 at Mercer High School.

Artists invited to display works

ALLIANCE — Villa Maria, 122 E. College St., is inviting local artists to participate in an “Arts for Alzheimer’s” project by displaying their works at the Dementia Garden and Wandering Path to be opened in June.

In collaboration with Mount Union College and artist P.R. Miller the garden will provide an outdoor sanctuary for those with dementia. Anyone interested in the project is asked to contact Sherry Groom at (330) 929-1071.

Guided walking tour planned at Wick Park

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host a free walking tour of Wick Park from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 6. The walk will start at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St., and will cover approximately 1 mile. Those participating will have an opportunity to hear tales of affluent families who lived in the area during the industrial era, and to view their estates and cultural institutions surrounding the park.

Afterward there will be free refreshments, and walkers will be able to view the final design plans for the Wick Park Revitalization Project. The event is sponsored in part by CityScape. For more information contact (330) 743-2589 or visit www.mahoninghistory.org.

Golf outing to benefit scholarship program

MANTUA — Mantua-Shalersville Area Chamber of Commerce will host a golf outing to raise funds for a scholarship program, which will benefit Crestwood High School seniors.

The event is scheduled for June 27 at Ravenswood Golf Course in Ravenna. The cost is $65 per person and includes golf, a cart and a steak dinner. Participants are eligible for prizes in various categories and door prizes The registration deadline is June 9.

Woodside principal speaks to Rotarians

AUSTINTOWN — The featured speaker at the May 17 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown was Carol Sutton, principal at Woodside Elementary School, who thanked the club for its support of Woodside Reads, a replacement for the state’s Ohio Reads program. She said 15 volunteer mentors helped 44 children, who ultimately read 250 books.

Sutton commented on the need to replace Austintown’s elementary schools. She said meetings are taking place and input is being garnered from the public

According to the speaker, the consensus so far is to construct two buildings to replace five elementary schools and Frank Ohl School. The state will provide 45 percent of the cost involved in the project.

Boy Scout Troop 84 to host expo

AUSTINTOWN — Boy Scout Troop 84 will host an expo from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the picnic pavilion on the property of Austintown Community Church, 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road.

The event is planned as an adventure and challenge for boys between the ages of 10 and 18.

Scouts will showcase their skills, conduct a demonstration campsite, and provide fun activities and a free lunch.

Scoutmaster is Jerry Reid and the troop committee chairman is Tom Eft. The troop will have a Rain Gutter Regatta in June, participate in the July 4th parade, attend Camp Manatoc in July, attend a Scrappers game in August, and participate in the open house at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna in September. Meetings are at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in the youth auditorium at the church.

Twirling clinics set

YOUNGSTOWN — Northern Strut Twirling teams will host six-week instructional baton and flag clinics at Astre Total Fitness, 374 Boardman-Poland Road. Twirling clinics will be on Tuesdays, beginning June 9, and flag clinic will be Saturdays, beginning June 13. The cost is $60 for six one-hour sessions.
