Salcedo, Fredericka advance to state tennis

ROCKY RIVER — Boardman High tennis player Robert Salcedo has earned a state berth for the Division I tournament.

Saturday, Salcedo finished fourth in district competition. Cloverleaf’s Ethan Dunbar defeated Salcedo (6-0, 6-3) then defeated Shaker Heights’ Tommy Marx (6-3, 7-6) to win first place.

In the third-place match, Salcedo lost to Westlake’s Colton Buffington (7-6, 6-3).

Division II

CANTON — Warren JFK’s Michael Fredericka and Poland’s Ben Brocker earned berths in the Div. II state tournament.

In Saturday’s competition at Weis Park, Frederick defeated Canton Central Catholic’s Colin Bernier (6-2, 6-1) then lost to Beachwood’s Mark Goldberg (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).

In the semifinals, Brocker lost to Goldberg (6-2, 6-3) then won third place when Bernier retired because of an injury.

Two Poland doubles teams also competed. Alex Tadla-Stu Duchek lost to Canton Central Catholic’s Seth Laubacher-Mark Marginean (6-2, 6-0).

Anthony Rosselli-Kenny Duncan were defeated by Rocky River’s James Meyer-Daniel Owens (6-0, 6-7, 7-5).
