Central Bucks South 3,200 relay team shatters PIAA record


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The 3,200 relay team from Central Bucks South recorded a time of 7:36.24 to shatter the PIAA and National Federation of High Schools records Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.

On the blazing hot second day of the competition, Jeff Dixon, Dave Manion, Matt Polesz and Tom Mallon broke the PIAA and NFHS record of 7:33.48 set in 1982 by Wissahickon High School.

The Paul Robeson Class AA girls’ 1,600 relay team broke the PIAA record from 2006 by Carver Engineering & Science by more than a second with a time of 3:52.04.

Two more PIAA marks were equaled as the Class AA girls 400 relay team from Swenson recorded a time of 47.84 to tie the record set by the same school in 2007. Leah Nugent, a senior from Abington, tied the PIAA mark in the Class AAA 300 hurdles with a time of 41.46.

Middletown senior Collin Ray capped off a banner two-day meet by defending his title in the Class AA discus throw. He also won the shot put title on Friday to give him three gold medals in as many events.

Trinity senior Christian Kuntz, a Penn State football recruit, swept the Class AA 110 and 300 hurdles.

Peabody senior Pierre Carr successfully defended his Class AAA 100 boys title by clocking a 10.56. He also won the 200 to sweep the big-school dash races.

Carlisle junior Ashley Corum won her second consecutive Class AAA girls’ triple jump title by clearing 49 feet, 9 inches on her final attempt of the event.

Justin Shirk, a senior from Central Dauphin who registered the longest javelin throw in the nation earlier this year at the Penn Relays, defended his Class AAA title with a throw of 212 feet, 10 inches.

The Swenson girls and Bishop McDevitt boys won the Class AA team championships, while the Abington girls and Hempfield boys claimed the Class AAA titles.
