YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University Gospel Choir will present its 10th anniversary spring concert at 7 p.m. today at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman Ave. The event is free.

Christian concert

COLUMBIANA — The Way Out will sponsor Charles and Roberta Dorsey’s concert, To God Be The Glory, from 6 to 8 p.m. May 9 at Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, Poland.

The concert will include a blend of traditional Christian music, praise songs and classical arrangements. The concert is free but an offering will be taken to help support The Way Out, www.thewayoutministries.com. The ministry is a nonprofit, Exodus International referral ministry that facilitates support groups for men and women dealing with homosexuality.

Priest appointment

YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Peter Haladej has been appointed administrator of St. Aloysius Church, 235 W. Fifth St., East Liverpool, and Immaculate Conception Church, 103 11th St., Wellsville, by Bishop George V. Murry. The appointment was effective Friday.

Father Haladej was born in Kosic-Okolie, Slovakia, and began seminary studies in the Slovak Republic. He came to the Diocese of Youngstown in 1999 and completed seminary studies at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pa. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 2002, in Kosic by Joseph Cardinal Tomko.

He has served as associate pastor at St. Rose Church in Girard and St. Christine Church.

Women’s Day weekend

WARREN — New Jerusalem Fellowship, 2555 Palmyra Road, will hold its annual Women’s Day weekend May 16 and 17. Guest speaker for the May 16 luncheon will be Sherri H. Brogdon of Calvary Ministries International, Youngstown. The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Renaissance Place, 1948 Palmyra Road. Tickets, which are $15 for adults and $12 for children, are available at New Jerusalem Fellowship, (330) 395-4518.

At services May 17, Queenie Merrell will speak at 8:30 a.m. and the Rev. Michelle Thomas of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, at 11. Host pastor is the Rev. Alton L. Merrell.

Worship series

YOUNGSTOWN — Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., is sponsoring “A Time of Refreshing” worship series. Pastor Phil Imler of Christian Fellowship Tabernacle will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Pastor Amariah McIntosh of Philips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church will speak at 7 p.m. May 13. Pastor Larry McCullogh of World Fellowship Interdenominational Church spoke this week.

City Prayer Team

YOUNGSTOWN — The City Prayer Team of Youngstown will have a prayer assembly at 10 a.m. today at Fifth Avenue Community Church, 1361 Fifth Ave. Fliers will be available for the National Day of Prayer, which will be observed Thursday.

YOUNGSTOWN — The 17th anniversary of the Rev. George Wilkins, pastor of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 328 S. Forest St., will be marked with a series of programs and services.

A gospel concert with the New Mighty Sons of Joy will be at 6 p.m. May 9. Speakers, all at 7 p.m., will be: the Rev. C.L. Ellis, pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, May 11; the Rev. C. Glenn, pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church, May 12; the Rev. Larry Parker, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church, May 13; the Rev. Dion Holmes, pastor of Christian Love Baptist Church, May 14; and the Rev. Sylvia Jennings, pastor of Oak Baptist Church, May 15. Services planned are at 11:30 a.m. May 17 with Rev. Concert at church

EAST LIVERPOOL — Sheridan African Methodist Episcopal Church, 301W. Ninth St., will host “CJ” Carlton Jenkins in a free concert at 6 p.m. today. Jenkins, an ordained minister, will sing Gospel and Motown selections. A free-will offering will be taken.

Gospel-style musical

YOUNGSTOWN — The choir and congregation of First Calvary Baptist Church, 126 E. Wood St., will sponsor a “Saturday Night Live/Gospel-Style Musical” at 5:30 p.m. May 9. Special guests will be Gospel Change of Farrell, Pa.

The event also will mark Mother’s Day at the church.

First anniversary

CAMPBELL — Community Church of God, 710 Sanderson Ave., will mark the first anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Eric U. Brown Sr., and his wife, Christol, at the church at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Guest speakers will be the Rev. Joseph E. Walker Jr., senior pastor of Restoration Christian Fellowship in Warren.

FARRELL, Pa. — Greater Pentecostal House of Prayer, 725 Fruit Ave., will mark its 52nd anniversary during services Sunday with the theme, “Walk with God.”

The Rev. Walter Stewart of Youngstown will speak at the 11 a.m. service and Pastor Richard E. Kimbrough of Fellowship Church of God in Christ, Struthers, at 4 p.m.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Rev. Bob Proy, who is involved in the church planting program with Calvary Ministries International, Fort Wayne, Ind., will speak at services Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. for Calvary Temple Worship Center.

It holds services at Epworth United Methodist Church, 805 E. Washington St.

Lecture on spirituality

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Sister Kathleen Dolphin will explore “Spirituality: How Might the Church Come to a Broader Understanding of Spirituality and Respond to its Challenge for Growth?” at the annual Bernardin lunch and lecture from noon to 3 p.m. May 29 at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center.

Villa Maria Community Center annually honors the memory of the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin and his Catholic Common Ground Project by offering a lecture on a current theme.

The Common Ground Initiative is an effort to face and overcome divisions in the Church.

The speaker, a sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is director of the Center for Spirituality at St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame.

The cost is $50 for the lecture and lunch. There is a student discount of $35. Registration deadline is Friday.

Blessing of Stations

NORTH JACKSON — New Stations of the Cross will be blessed Sunday at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N. Lipkey Road.

A Mass will be at 2 p.m. and the blessing will follow.

The feast of Our Lady of Lebanon also will be marked.

Annual lecture

PITTSBURGH — The ninth annual Sts. Cyril and Methodius Lecture is scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Seminary with featured speaker, the Rev. Ronald G. Roberson.

His topic will be “Catholic-Orthodox Relations: Hopes for the Future.”

He is associate director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The lecture series is sponsored by Sts. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, the center of learning for Byzantine Catholic Churches in North America.
