Sunday, March 29, 2009

YOUNGSTOWN — The third annual book fair of Youngstown, “Plant the Seed to Read,” will be from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Admission is free.

Activities in the Davis Education and Visitor Center include storytellers, craft activities and creative-writing exercises.

Illustrator Tim Bowers and children’s authors Amanda Blanda, Brenda Richards and Wendy Lynch will do presentations and be available for book signings. There will be special-guest appearances by PBS children’s characters Word Girl and Sid the Science Kid, as well as YSU’s Pete the Penguin and the library’s Ready to Read Raccoon. The library will also present the “Baby Brilliant” program.

Sign language interpretation will be available for the hearing impaired.

The Altrusa Club of Youngstown, in partnership with Mill Creek MetroParks, Western Reserve PBS and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, is sponsoring the event. Other participants include the Audubon Society, Bread for the Brain, Barnes & Noble, Children’s Center for Science and Technology, First Book Mahoning Valley, Mahoning Valley Parent Magazine, M. Sanko Photography, The Vindicator, Ohio Early Education “Help Me Grow” and Child Care Connection.

Child-friendly snacks and lunch items will be for sale in the Garden Cafe. The authors and Barnes & Noble will have books for purchase. Because of limited space, strollers will not be permitted in the Davis Center during the event.
