Food drive

WARREN — The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra is participating in the Orchestras Feeding America National Food Drive at their concert, “Swing into Spring,” at 8 p.m Saturday at W.D. Packard Music Hall. Those attending are asked to bring nonperishable food items to help feed our hungry friends and neighbors in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, said Barry Dunaway, executive director.

The award-winning orchestra, under the direction of Susan Davenny Wyner, is composed of 55 of the area’s finest musicians. Tickets are still available and may be obtained by calling the music hall at (330) 841-2931.

Volunteers sought

WARREN — Trumbull Mobile Meals is looking for volunteers to help pack and deliver meals to the sick and elderly. Volunteers are asked to spare an hour a week or even per month. Mobile Meals relies on 50-55 volunteers daily to deliver meals to more than 200 people. For more information or to volunteer, call (330) 394-2538.

Outlet causes fire

YOUNGSTOWN — An electrical short caused a fire early Thursday that sent one 12-year-old girl to the hospital. Firefighters were called to 1328 East High Ave. just after 2 a.m. for flames in an upstairs bedroom. Reports say it started when an electrical outlet shorted and set a nearby bed ablaze. The girl was sleeping in the bed but was awakened by the heat from the flames. A blanket on the bed adhered to her legs. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.

Damages were isolated to the bedroom area and ceiling on the lower level. No loss estimate was given, and there was no report on the girl’s condition.

Easter swim party

SALEM — A Hop In and Swim Easter Party will be from 7 to 9 p.m. April 3 at Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave. Snacks will be available. The cost is $1 per member and $5 per member family maximum (mom, dad and kids under 18) and $2 for nonmembers and $9 for nonmember families maximum. Registration deadline is Monday or until full. Registrations are nonrefundable. Space is limited.

Sex sting

NEW WATERFORD — A man from Gowanda, N.Y., faces a 10-year mandatory minimum federal prison term after being caught here in an Internet sex sting March 1, police said.

Mark Wayne Miller, 40, came to New Waterford thinking he was going to engage in sex with a 13-year-old girl and her mother, police said. He was actually communicating with New Waterford Police Chief Daniel A. Haueter, who continues to make Internet sex stings.

Miller was arraigned earlier this week before a U.S. Magistrate in federal court.

Police made the announcement this week. Miller is accused of traveling to Erie Pa., and then to New Waterford, where he was arrested.

Police look for shooter

YOUNGSTOWN — City police are trying to determine who shot a 26-year-old South Side man. Officers met Eric Fetty of E. Philadelphia at St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Boardman campus just after 10 p.m. Wednesday. According to reports, Fetty told officers he had been walking his dogs in the East Philadelphia area just after 10 p.m. when he heard arguing and gunshots. He later realized he had been shot in the groin.

Robbery investigation

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating a reported robbery. Reports state a 19-year-old Howard Avenue man told police he offered a ride to of Belle Vista and Oakwood avenues to a man known only as “CJ” around 4 p.m. Wednesday. “CJ” told him to hand over all his money before getting out of the car. The man said “CJ” did not brandish a weapon.
