Softball canceled

CANFIELD — Wednesday’s scheduled doubleheader between the Youngstown State and Morehead State softball teams was canceled because of rain. It will not be made up.

Former 49er joins Thunder

BOARDMAN — Wide receiver C.J. Brewer joined the Mahoning Valley Thunder on Tuesday.

The 6-3, 215 Brewer was assigned to the team in conjunction with the arenafootball2 league office.

To make room on the roster, defensive back Montae Bailey was placed on re-assignment.

Brewer is in his second season in the af2 and first with the Thunder.

He spent both the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. Prior to signing with San Francisco, Brewer began his professional career by playing for the af2’s Albany Conquest.

Brewer played in three games for Albany during the 2006 season, totaling 15 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns. His performance led to a free-agent contract with the 49ers.

Miller, in Ireland, works 61st title bout

DUBLIN, Ireland — Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge last Saturday for the WBA super bantamweight championship.

Challenger Bernard Dunne of Ireland upset current champion Ricardo Cordoba of Panama for the title, a fight which observers are calling the fight of the year thus far.

It was Miller’s 47th world title bout and, including regional title bouts, his 61st overall.

His next assignment is the Cleveland Golden Gloves tournament beginning April 4 at the Euclid Sports Plant.

Rohan named BSC player of week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Winthrop sophomore Eddie Rohan a product of Ursuline High School and the Youngstown Class B Baseball League has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week for games played March 16-22.

Rohan provided clutch hitting to help Winthrop to a 3-2 record against three prominent opponents last week. He hit safely in all five games and .350 (7-20) for the week with three home runs, one double, a .409 on-base average and an .850 slugging percentage.

Rohan batted .308 in the Coastal Carolina series.

Women’s senior tournament, April 4-5

BOARDMAN — The 17th annual senior tournament of the Youngstown USBC Women’s Bowling Association will be the weekend of April 4-5.

The dates and times are April 4 at 2 p.m. and April 5 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Camelot Lanes.

Entry fee of $15 should be made payable to the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Senior Tournament and mailed before March 27 to Betty Kana, 2936 Eddie Street, Youngstown 44509.

Winner Logistics Transportation Systems, West Side Pizza Joe’s and C-G Pro Shop are co-sponsors of the senior event.

Women’s 9-pin no-tap event set

CANFIELD — The Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 10th annual 9-pin no-tap handicap tournament for women and men will be at Amron Lanes starting April 17-19.

Entry fee per person is $16 ($64 per team) and should be mailed to the association office by April 14. There will be two women’s divisions and two divisions for men and women mixed teams.

Springfield’s Kennedy to play at Malone

CANTON — Rachael Kennedy of Springfield Local, recently signed a national letter of intent to attend Malone University this fall and to play volleyball for the Pioneers.

A 5’11” middle hitter, Kennedy earned three varsity letters in volleyball as well as four varsity letters in basketball.

Last fall, as a senior, Kennedy was named District I Division III player of the year. She was also third-team all-state, first team all-district and first-team All-ITCL.

Kennedy, who intends to major in nursing, is the daughter of Richard and Michele Kennedy of Poland.

Mercer Raceway set to open Saturday

MERCER, Pa. — Thanks to a dry and mild March, it’s all systems a go for the 2009 season opener Saturday night at Mercer Raceway Park.

The roar of the engines are back for the 58th anniversary season opener as the “Chiller Thriller” will feature the BRP Modified Tour, the United E-Mod Series, open Stock Cars, and the Mini Stocks with racing at 7 p.m. The rain date is April 4.

After a two-and-a-half-year absence, the ground-pounding Big-Block Modifieds made their way back last August.
