Warren cancels classes for boys hoops semifinal

WARREN — Friday’s classes in the Warren City School District have been canceled so students and staff can travel to Columbus to support the Warren G. Harding High School basketball team in its semifinal match of the 2009 boys state basketball tournament.

The game is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.

The school board adjusted the school calendar to move the final day of classes to June 8 to ensure the district complies with the number of school days required by law.

Police probing thefts from garages and sheds

WARREN — Three homeowners in the area of Porter Street and St. Clair Drive Northeast reported that a four-wheeler, tools, a television and other items were taken from their garages and sheds early Monday.

The homeowners discovered the thefts Monday morning and reported them to police. Two sheds and two garages were broken into, police said. The four-wheeler alone was valued at $7,000.

Garden show scheduled Friday through Sunday

AUSTINTOWN — The Greater Youngstown Area Home and Garden Show is coming to town.

The event runs from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Austintown Expo Center in the Austintown Plaza on Mahoning Avenue.

Greek parade, luncheon set Sunday in Warren

WARREN — St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St., will have its ninth annual Greek Independence Day parade at noon Sunday starting at the church. The route will continue west on High Street, north on Mahoning Avenue to city hall, where a Greek flag will be raised, followed by a short ceremony. A luncheon is planned at St. Demetrios community center; there is a small fee.

This week marked two significant events in Greek history. The Greek revolution began March 25, 1821, as Greeks rose up against the Ottoman Empire that had occupied Greece for 400 years. March 22, 1829, marked the day of the creation of the modern Greek state. The Feast of the Annunication was today on the Orthodox calendar.
