United Way drive falls short of fundraising goal, makes cuts
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way fell short of its $2.9 million 2008 financial campaign goal, forcing the agency to cut contributions to numerous programs in 2009.
The campaign raised $2 million, and accounting for anticipated pledges not yet received, is projected to raise $2.27 million, or 78.3 percent of its goal, said Bob Hannon, president and chief financial officer.
Programs were cut an average of 20 percent, said Hannon. But programs that provide shelter, food and disaster services, were “held harmless,” while other programs, such as some of those offered by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and the Youngstown YMCA, were cut 39 percent over last year.
The funding reductions were determined by the United Way executive committee.
