McKinley girls fall to MND in semis

COLUMBUS — Senior Kendall Hackney, Ms. Basketball, scored 17 points as Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame beat Canton McKinley 62-51 in a Division I semifinal Friday.

Gabby Smith added 13 as the Cougars advanced for a chance at becoming the second school to win four consecutive titles.

The Cougars led McKinley 39-38 with about three minutes to play in the third quarter but outscored the Bulldogs 19-1 over the next 9:03. Mount Notre Dame put up 14 straight points in the fourth quarter until Shauntiva Humphries made a 3-pointer with 1:44 to play to make it 59-42.

Ameryst Alston had 16 points for the Bulldogs (22-4).

Toledo Start 61, W. Chester Lakota West 56

Maleeka Kynard scored 19 points and Yolanda Richardson added 15 to lead Toledo Start in the other Div. I semifinal.

Toledo Start used 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to turn a six-point deficit into a six-point lead.

Lakota West (24-3) had the ball and chance tie the game at 59 in the final seconds, but Kynard intercepted a pass by Alexis Rogers just outside the Lakota three-point line. Kynard then made two free throws with 1.9 seconds left for the final margin.

Rogers finished with 27 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans trailed by 11 in the first minute of the third quarter and didn’t take their first lead until Azia Bishop made a free throw for a 47-46 score with 6:46 left in the game.

Hathaway Brown 53, Kettering Alter 40

Alanna Guy and Alexis Dobbs had 12 points as Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown avenged last year’s championship defeat in Div. II.

Hathaway Brown (20-6) took a seven-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in its balanced attack. Mylan Woods, the AP co-player of the year, added 11 points. The Blazers will make their third straight appearance in the title game.

Megan Courtney led Alter with 11 points off the bench. Alter (24-3) defeated Brown 60-46 a year ago.

Wapakoneta 40, Warsaw River View 31

Devon Golden scored eight of her 13 points in the final five minutes to help Wapakoneta earn its first trip to the title game.

Leading 26-25, the Redskins (25-1) scored six straight points, four by Golden, to take a 32-25 lead with 2:20 remaining.

After Kari Daugherty hit a short jumper for No. 7 River View (23-3), Kailey Schneider responded for the Redskins with a driving layup past the taller Daugherty to regain the seven-point margin.

Daugherty followed with two free throws but Golden made two fouls to make it 36-29 with 1:26 left and Wapakoneta held the ball for the majority of the remaining time and made four more free throws. Daugherty, the AP co-player of the year, led all scorers with 19 points.
