easter traditions \ Workshop and celebration In the Polish-American community, the observance of Lent is about great fasting and Easter is about great feasting, both with family and church traditions.

What: Swieconka, a Polish Easter tradition workshop, will be led by Lawrence Kozlowski, folklorist and author. The hands-on event will allow participants to learn about ritual foods and folk crafts. There will be lectures and tastings focusing on Polish Easter foods including zurek, a rye-inspired soup; baranek wielkanocny, butter lamb; and white borscht. There also will be Polish beer and vodka, a Chinese auction and raffle and polka DJ. Demonstrations will be on pisanki, wax-decorated eggs; palmowa tkania, palm weaving; and wycinanki, decorative paper cutting. Vendors will offer decorated eggs, woven palms, recipe books, basket covers and more.

When: From 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Where: St. Casimir’s Church, 149 Jefferson St., Youngstown.

Sponsor: The Krakowiaki Polish Folk Circle, a nonprofit community-based organization that focuses on preserving Polish culture and heritage through dance, music, language and folk art. The Krakowiaki children and adult choir performs at community events. This event is a fundraiser to buy additional costumes for the group.

After-Easter event: Polish Youngstown and Kuzman’s Lounge, Route 422, Girard, will sponsor a trip on Dyngus Day, Easter Monday, from 7 to 11 p.m. April 13 to Buffalo, N.Y., where the largest celebration is in the city’s Historic Polonia District. There is a parade, party and music. Dyngus originates from the baptism on Easter Mohday of Mieszko I, duke of Poland, in 966 A.D., uniting all of Poland under the banner of Christianity.
