17-year-old arrested in assault, carjacking

YOUNGSTOWN — Police have arrested a 17-year-old teenager in connection with Thursday's assault and carjacking of an elderly woman.

Police report the arrest came after first wrestling a loaded handgun from the teen.

Officers spotted the elderly woman’s stolen four-door Saturn traveling in the Ravenwood Avenue and Southern Boulevard area with two male teens inside, according to reports. When officers attempted to stop the car both teens jumped out and ran.

Officers caught up to one of the boys on East Avondale Avenue. The boy had his hand in his pants and when officers grabbed him, they discovered he was attempting to pull a gun out of his pants.

Officers' repeated orders to let go of the gun were met with cursing and refusals from the teen. Officers were eventually able to wrestle the gun from him and place him in handcuffs.
