Akron mayor relieved to survive recall vote

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

AKRON (AP) — The city’s mayor who survived a recall vote says the episode was a reminder that you can’t make everybody happy.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic kept his job Tuesday as residents voted nearly 3-1 against the recall.

The 59-year-old Democrat has been mayor for 23 years and won his current four-year term in 2007.

At a victory party, the mayor said he would continue to be strong and fight for the citizens of Akron. He also remembered how his grandmother once told him not to dwell on the small percentage of people who she said would never be satisfied.

Akron attorney Warner Mendenhall, who led the recall effort, says the campaign sent an important message to City Hall. His side had accused Plusquellic of being wasteful and alienating.
