Swish schedules first tryout camp

NILES — The Youngstown Swish’s will hold their first open basketball tryout on July 11 at the Ralph A. Infante Wellness Center in Niles.

The tryout will be split into two-hour court sessions (9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.) to ensure that all participants will get a full look from coach Bob Patton and the Swish staff.

The tryout will be limited to the first 48 players registered.

Registration is $100 or $135 at-the-door if there is still room.

Registration forms can be downloaded from the Swish website, www.youngstownswish.com, and mailed in with check or money order.

Visingardi gets OHSAA scholarship

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Bryan Visingardi, a graduate of Springfield Local High School, will receive a scholarship from the Ohio High School Athletic Association at a banquet Friday in Columbus.

The OHSAA will give 54 scholarships to scholar-athletes at an event held at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North.

Visingardi has a 3.86 GPA and played football and baseball for the Tigers.

He will continue his education at Slippery Rock where he will play both sports.

Sullivan to receive Media Service plaque

Vindicator sportswriter Bill Sullivan will receive a Media Service Award plaque at a dinner Tuesday at the Akron Fairlawn Holiday Inn.

The Northeast District Athletic Board of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Program will present Sullivan the award.

He’s in his 27th year with the paper.

Lake Erie accepted

PAINESVILLE — Lake Erie College has been accepted into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2010-11 academic year.

Lake Erie is a NCAA Div. II school.

Pavlik book signing

FAIRLAWN — Greg Gulas and David Lee Morgan Jr. will sign copies of their book, “Kelly ‘The Ghost’ Pavlik: The Pride of Youngstown” from 2 p.m. to 4 Saturday at Border’s in Fairlawn, a suburb of Akron.

Summers selected

STRUTHERS — Justin Summers of the 1080 Media team was picked the Youngstown Class B League player of the week.

For the week he allowed just one hit, one walk and had 11 strikeouts in five innings of work.

Media won all five of its games.

Glaciers play at Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The Ohio Glaciers baseball team has been selected to compete in the Cooperstown Dream Park and American Youth Tournament.

The team is composed of players from the Mahoning Valley.

Soap Box Derby

YOUNGSTOWN — Melody Castner, 8, of Hubbard rolled to the Stock Division championship of the Greater Youngstown Soap Box Derby Saturday.

The Super Stock Division was captured by Haleigh Kuebler, 15, of Berlin Center.

The Masters Division went to Julia Castner, 13, of Hubbard.

OCEANPORT, N.J. — Our Edge outdueled Gone Astray in the stretch to win the $70,000 Coronado’s Quest Stakes by a head at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

Trained by Nick Zito and ridden by Elvis Trujillo, the 3-year-old colt covered the 11‚Ñ16 miles on a sloppy track in 1:432‚Ñ5 and paid $6.60, $3.60 and $2.60. Gone Astray returned $3.60 and $2.10, while Endymion was five lengths back in third and paid $2.60.

In the co-feature, Beacon Hill Road won a three-horse stretch battle to capture the $60,000 Anderson Fowler Stakes, beating Southern Exchange by a half length.

New York Stakes

NEW YORK — Icon Project romped in the mud, beating Criticism by 131‚Ñ4 lengths in the $245,000 New York Stakes for fillies and mares at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The race, originally scheduled for the turf, scratched down to five runners with the surface switch.

Fourth in the early stages, Icon Project caught the front-running Criticism turning for home and glided past for her third win in nine starts.

Victory Notion wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Victory Notion beat Holy Anthem in the deep stretch by a head to win Saturday’s $49,995 Le Cou Cou Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Jeff Talley and ridden by Jon Court, Victory Notion trailed in the field of eight through much of the 11‚Ñ16 mile race.

Tour of Switzerland

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — Tony Martin of Germany has won the eighth stage of the Tour of Switzerland, and Tadej Valjavec of Slovenia clung to the overall lead.

Martin finished the 113-mile route in 4 hours, 12 minutes, 31 seconds on Saturday to record the sixth stage win in the Tour de France warmup for Team Columbia-Highroad. Four others riders with the American team have also won stages.

He edged Damiano Cunego of Italy, with Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland two seconds back.

Phelps back in form

MONTREAL — Michael Phelps has set a new personal best in winning the 100-meter butterfly at the Canada Cup.

His time of 50.48 seconds Saturday bettered his previous best of 50.58 and narrowly missed the world record of 50.40 set by fellow American Ian Crocker at the 2005 world championships.

Phelps is using the Montreal meet as a final tuneup for the U.S. championships, which will serve as the trials for the world championships in Rome next month.

Golden Jubilee Stakes

ASCOT, England — Art Connoisseur has won the Golden Jubilee Stakes in an upset on the final day of racing at Royal Ascot.

The 3-year-old colt burst ahead in the stretch and beat American-based entry Cannonball by a half length Saturday

Cannonball is owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Wesley Ward, who earlier in the meet saddled two winners in becoming the first American trainer to win at Royal Ascot.
