YOUNGSTOWN — The sixth president of Youngstown State University said 2009-10 will be his final year at the university’s helm.

David C. Sweet, in an end-of-the-year report Friday to the YSU Board of Trustees, said the date marks the end of his ninth year as president “and the beginning of my 10th and final year.” The statement didn’t come as a surprise.

Sweet, in a memo, had informed the campus community in April of his plans to retire, saying that he had anticipated making the announcement this summer but that recent events and news reports prompted him to inform the campus early.

In his memo, he made it clear he intends to fulfill the terms of his current contract and end his tenure as president June 30, 2010.

Enrollment, diversity and partnerships have been constant themes during his tenure and will remain priorities for 2009-10, Sweet said Friday, as he outlined this year’s accomplishments and the goals for next year.

Scott Schulick, chairman of the board of trustees, paid tribute to what he said has been Sweet’s exemplary leadership of the university during his tenure.

The president has excelled in leading the university in developing his three key initiatives of enrollment, diversity and partnerships, Schulick said, also acknowledging the contributions of Sweet’s wife, Patricia, to YSU and the community.
