Street closing for derby

YOUNGSTOWN — Fifth Avenue between Grant and Wood streets will be closed from 5 p.m. today until 6 p.m. Saturday for the Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby.

These side streets will be closed restricting access to Fifth: Wood Street, Rayen Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Orchard Place and Arlington Street.

Robbery suspects sought

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are looking for the group of men responsible for robbing a 54-year-old South Side man at gunpoint in his home.

Police said the West Boston Avenue man was home at 10 p.m. Wednesday when two men came into his home, pulled out a gun and demanded cash and jewelry. The men took small items from around the house and the man’s 2006 Chevrolet Impala and fled.

Handel’s for animals

BOARDMAN — Handel’s Ice Cream is doing a fundraiser with Angels for Animals beginning Saturday.

Dogs up for adoption will be at the Handel’s Creekside location on Boardman-Canfield Road from noon to 4 p.m., and the adoption sites will be offered at different Handel’s locations throughout the summer.

New Middletown flooding

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Village officials are asking residents who experienced flooding problems in Wednesday’s storm to stop by the municipal building at 10711 Main St. between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to file a Flooding Reporting Form.

The forms will be used to seek recovery money for damage and to identify problem areas.

Poland meeting today

POLAND — Mayor Timothy Sicafuse has called a special meeting of village council for 5 p.m. today at village hall to suspend a license-fee waiver portion of an ordinance and revisit it at a later date.

Madden 2009 at mall

NILES — If you think you have the gaming skills to be the best in the Mahoning Valley, you have a chance to prove it Saturday at Eastwood Mall.

The inaugural Video Athletic League features Madden 2009 at the mall. It is a new competitive concept that will tour the nation this summer.

The video tournament begins at 8 a.m. at Center Court. Competitors can snag the top prize of $1,500. Other prizes include a 36-inch plasma TV and a $200 mall gift card.

The entry fee is $25 per participant. Registration cards are available at GameStop, Best Buy, FYE, Buffalo Wild Wings and the mall’s customer service center.

2-car crash investigated

EDINBURG, Pa. — Police are investigating a two-car accident.

Police said William R. Smith of Taylor Street, Girard, pulled his car to a stop sign Wednesday and stopped at the intersection of Skyhill Road and Harbor Edinburg Road. Police said Smith pulled through the stop sign, and his vehicle struck a car driven by Deborah Nocera of Gary Lane in Edinburg.

Nocera and an unidentified passenger in her car were taken to Jameson Memorial Hospital.
