Gospel singer to give free concert Wednesday
YOUNGSTOWN — Emma Cunningham, gospel singer, will present a free concert, “He Did It All,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church social hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel.
The event is being co-sponsored by Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church, 252 E. Wood St., and St. James Church of God in Christ, 75 S. Prospect St.
Cunningham, who was born in Hartwell, Ga., was incarcerated for almost 12 years, and spent 31‚Ñ2 years on death row. She later was exonerated on the charge of murder and released.
With a co-author, she wrote, “From Death Row to Life,” about her difficult childhood and her troubled past.
She was one of six children who lived in poverty. By 15, she was fending for herself and her two brothers; they picked peaches to sustain themselves.
Her latest CD is “He Did It All,” which was produced with assistance by Emily Saliers, one of the Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls, who heard Cunningham sing.
Saliers encouraged Cunningam to do the CD of traditional songs and ones Cunningham wrote about her faith and experiences.
Blessing of bikes
YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Joseph Rudjak, pastor, will conduct a special blessing of motorcycles next weekend.
Blessings will take place after the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday and after the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday in the parking lot at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St.
Another blessing will be after the noon Mass Sunday in the parking lot at Our Lady of Hungary Church, 545 N. Belle Vista Ave.
All vehicles are welcome.
Street meetings
YOUNGSTOWN — Mount Moriah Fire Baptized Holiness Church, 84 Bright Ave., will have street meetings with song and Scripture from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, July 7 and 9 and Aug. 4 and 6.
Elder called to serve two-year mission
BOARDMAN — Elder Nick Lawson of Boardman has been called to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will be serving in Ventura, Calif.
He is a member of the Youngstown Ward, 2205 Tibbits-Wick Road, Girard.
In preparation for missionary service, he attended the church seminary program for four years.
His assignment came from President Thomas S. Monson, president of the 13.5-million member church headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Lawson reported May 27 to the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah.
Missionaries serve voluntarily and are not paid.
He is a son of Al and Tracy Lawson and graduated from Boardman High School in 2008.
Lawson is the first member of his immediate family to serve a church mission.
Two of his cousins, Greg and Alicia Lawson, have served missions in Russia.
Concert at church
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Free Methodist Community Church, 9900 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, will have a free concert at 7 p.m. June 21.
Featured will be the Ellwood City Area Civic Chorale, which is celebrating its 55th year.
Penn-Ohio Singers, Freemasons at service
HERMITAGE, Pa. — St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave., will host Mercer County Freemasons and members of the Penn-Ohio Singers, an award-winning men’s barbershop group, during worship June 28.
The Masons, wearing their symbolic aprons, will attend and help lead the 10 a.m. service. Pastor David Williamson’s sermon will be “A Parable for Builders.”
The Penn-Ohio Singers, who rehearse every Tuesday night at St. Paul’s, will provide special music.
A luncheon will follow, with tickets at $5 per person. They must be purchased from the church by June 22.
Prayers for the sick
CANFIELD — Lifecare Ministry Center, Lucille Orr Ministries Inc., 5357 S. Raccoon Road, will have prayers for the sick and a healing service at 7 p.m. on the second Friday of each month.
Guest musician
CANFIELD — Guest musician, Jay Michael, will officiate at a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St.
He will present a free concert at 6:30 p.m. that night.
