Police chiefs arrested in celebrity tabloid case

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio — Two southeastern Ohio police chiefs accused of breaking into a home to dig for celebrity tabloid material have been arrested.

A special prosecutor has said he was looking into allegations that the chiefs in May illegally entered the home of a woman carrying twins for actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

Belmont County jail personnel confirm that Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack were booked Wednesday night and released.

The jail would not release charges or if the men posted bonds.

Harrison County Prosecutor T. Shawn Hervey had said he would likely present charges to the grand jury this week. He has scheduled a news conference for today.

The surrogate mother was not at the Martins Ferry home at the time of the alleged break-in.

Jude Law to become father for fourth time

LONDON — Jude Law’s spokeswoman says the actor is set to become a father for the fourth time. The identity of the mother has not been revealed.

Publicist Sara Keene says that “following a relationship last year, Jude Law has been advised by the birth mother that he is to be the father of a child due in the autumn.”

She says Law is no longer in a relationship with the woman but “intends to be a fully supportive part of the child’s life.”

The Daily Mirror newspaper reported Thursday that Law met the woman while filming Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” movie in New York last year.

The 36-year-old actor has three children with ex-wife Sadie Frost.

He is starring in “Hamlet” on the London stage and on Broadway in October.

FX to debut ‘Lawman’ drama next spring

DETROIT — FX says a new drama series called “Lawman” will debut next spring and is based on the character Raylan Givens created by veteran crime novelist Elmore Leonard.

The cable network says 13 episodes have been shot for “Lawman.”

The show stars Timothy Olyphant in the role of U.S. Marshal Givens, an old-fashioned lawman who was featured in Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole.” Leonard will serve as an executive producer.

Olyphant starred in HBO’s “Deadwood” and has also appeared in a number of films, including “Hitman” and “The Girl Next Door.”

Ex-government doctor hired by ABC News

ABC News has hired a top government doctor as part of an expansion of its medical coverage.

Dr. Richard Besser, who was acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when the swine-flu epidemic began, will join the network as senior health and medical editor.

ABC also promoted its longtime health commentator Dr. Timothy Johnson to chief medical editor. Johnson is a regular on “Good Morning America,” “Nightline” and “20/20.”

Besser, a pediatrician, plans to report on obesity, swine flu and other public-health issues for multiple programs starting in September.
