Ohio woman recovers dad’s ashes missing 10 years

Friday, July 31, 2009

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) — A man’s cremated remains have been found in Ohio and returned to his daughter 10 years after she lost them.

An urn containing the ashes of Val Torok turned up this week when new owners took over a storage facility in the Cleveland suburb of Middleburg Heights.

Police were able to track down his daughter, Diane Christen. She says the remains of her father, who died in 1996, unintentionally wound up in storage with other possessions when she and her husband lost their home to foreclosure a decade ago.

Christen says they tried to retrieve their stuff later but were told by the storage company that it had all been sold at auction by mistake.

But the buyer returned the urn to the storage company, which put it away in a back-room locker.
