GM Lordstown salaried retirees plan meeting

CANFIELD — The GM Lordstown Salaried Retirees Club will have a dinner meeting Aug. 12 at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. A social welcome will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $17 a person.

Chamber will update report on wages, benefits

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber is sending a survey to more than 1,200 area businesses seeking data that will used to update its starting wages and benefits report. The chamber uses the information in efforts to recruit new companies to the area.

The complete report will be available to all those who participate. The survey will be distributed to businesses in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, either by e-mail or by regular mail, by July 30 and should be returned by Aug. 20.

If a business has more than 10 employees and would like to participate, it can download a copy of the survey from the economic development area of the chamber’s Web site, www.regionalchamber.com.

Business incubator receives funding

YOUNGSTOWN — National City Bank Foundation and Ruth H. Beecher Charitable Trust recently contributed funding to the Youngstown Business Incubator.

National City’s contribution of $8,000 will be used for investing in entrepreneurial resources to support emerging technology companies. The contribution of $4,000 by Beecher Trust is earmarked for facility renovations to accommodate new tenants.

In the past year, the incubator has approved six new portfolio companies for occupancy in addition to providing entrepreneurial counseling to nontenant ventures. In May, it opened INSPIRE Lab, a flexible development suite for early-stage companies, and more commercial space will be available this fall when the renovation of the adjacent Semple Building is completed.

Ex-Chrysler engineer buys a sub franchise

LIBERTY — Chris Smallwood, a former engineer at Chrysler’s plant in Twinsburg, has bought an abandoned building at 3219 Belmont Ave. and opened a Charley’s Grilled Subs franchise.

“Buying a Charley’s Grilled Subs franchise fulfilled my desire to be my own boss,” Smallwood said, adding that he liked the location because it’s near the new Wal-Mart that’s opening in Liberty.

Charley’s has 370 locations worldwide. It offers Philly cheese steaks, fresh-squeezed lemonade, gourmet French fries, ice cream and milkshakes.

Survey: Even 1 typo can disqualify candidate

NEW YORK — Just one typo in a r sum could cost you a job, according to a recent survey.

Three out of four executives said just one or two inadvertent strokes of the keyboard would remove an applicant from consideration for a job, while 40 percent said they wouldn’t hire a candidate who had a typo in their r sum .

The telephone survey of 1,000 senior executives was conducted on behalf of staffing firm Accountemps, a unit of Robert Half International Inc.
