UNION TOWNSHIP Supervisors

Friday, July 24, 2009

Union township supervisors handled these matters at their Thursday night meeting.

Announced the township’s summer paving program will start in mid-August. The roads included will be several in the Medure Development on Winter Road as well as Croach and McCracken roads.

Passed a resolution to borrow $80,000 from First Commonwealth Bank at 4.76 percent for six years to finance a recently purchased tractor with an articulating boom mower and ditch attachment. The loan will be paid back with local service-tax revenues.

Heard from Supervisor Pat Angiolelli that the township is considering paying $10,000 to launch a township Web site, which would be an economic-development tool.

Agreed to apply for a grant through the Lawrence County Council of Governments to increase emergency efficiency at the municipal building. The grant, if awarded, would pay for changing to energy-efficient lighting in the garage and outside the building, insulating and installing new windows. The township would have to provide a 10 percent match.

Announced the township is working with the Lawrence County Planning Commission to try to get a grant to establish a physical-fitness trail at Scotland Meadows Park.

Heard a report that criminal arrests are down significantly. Angiolelli attributed the drop to recent passage of the disorderly house ordinance. The ordinance was passed several months ago to deal with excessive partying, continual domestic disputes and noise at various locations throughout the township.

Announced that police are checking the Oakland area this week for violations of the township’s property-maintenance code. Eventually the entire township will be checked.
