Pa. adds 217 acres to buffer near Flight 93 site

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission and The Conservation Fund will pay $130,000 to add 217 acres to a state game land that serve as a buffer near the Flight 93 Memorial crash site in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The agencies are buying the land from Berwind Natural Resources Group. The purchase means State Game Land 93 now has 575 acres.

The game land opened to the public for hunting, trapping, fishing and other outdoor activities in 2006. Because it’s preserved for those uses, it will prevent development close to the memorial site of United Airlines Flight 93.

The $58 million, 2,200-acre memorial is scheduled to open on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, in which 40 passengers and crew were killed when the hijacked airliner crashed.
