‘African-American Read-In’ will promote literacy

BOARDMAN — Youngstown city schools, in conjunction with Barnes and Noble Booksellers, will present “The African American Read-In” from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the bookstore in the Shops at Boardman Park on U.S. Route 224.

The program is designed to promote literacy and will feature short passages from books, poems or essays written by black authors.

The store will donate a portion of purchases made during the read-in to the district’s Student Advisory Board.

Courses will help students in preparing for the ACT

CANFIELD —The Ursuline Center, 4300 Shields Road, will be the site of Sunday courses to prepare students for the April 4 ACT college admission test.

A morning course will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. and an afternoon session will meet from 2 to 4:35 p.m. for five Sundays beginning Feb. 8. Tuition for the 13-hour course is $175 and registration is required by contacting David Diciccio at (330) 755-2710.

Scholastic Book Fair set at Youngstown Christian

BOARDMAN — Youngstown Christian School, Wychwood Lane at Southern Boulevard, will have a Scholastic Book Fair daily from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Feb. 9-12.

The goal is to buy books for the media center and classroom libraries.

The fair will offer specially priced books and educational products. Buyers can use the Classroom Wish List and One for Books programs as guides.

Malone University plans Discovery Day for students

CANTON —The Malone University office of admissions will have a Discover Day for high school juniors and seniors Feb. 16.

The program offers an admissions presentation, a campus tour and lunch with a professor from the prospective student’s chosen major.

LEGO League competition scheduled at Eastwood

NILES — The Art Outreach Gallery in the Eastwood Mall will have its first LEGO League building competition in the mall’s Center Court from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 7.

The contest will feature pupils from various schools in the area.

At 3:30 p.m., the Art Outreach Gallery will feature the Boardman Center Middle School Orchestral Ensemble.

Preschool registration for Villa Maria Teresa

LIBERTY — Villa Maria Teresa Preschool is accepting registration for 3-year-old and 4-year-old preschool children at the school office, 50 Warner Road.

The preschool offers a full- or half-day programs with a hot lunch and snack provided with either program. A before/after school child care program is also available.
