NORTH JACKSON — The Jackson-Milton Board of Education has entered into a contract to have a technology package added to a new high school/middle school under construction.

During a special meeting Thursday, school officials accepted a recommendation for a $456,989 bid from Mid West Telephone Service Inc. of Girard to add wiring to a variety of sound systems and other components to be installed in the new school, which is set to open next September.

Speaking to the board was Bill Gantz, project manager with The Ruhlin Co. of Sharon Center in Medina County, who said the bid was the lowest of four offers. Ruhlin is the district’s construction manager.

Most of the money will be used for computer wiring, but it also will go toward wiring for sound systems in the gym and classrooms, video display equipment, ceiling projector mounts, electrical projection screens and clocks, noted Treasurer John Zinger.

Also included will be wiring for two plasma TVs as well as microphones, Superintendent Kirk Baker added.

The board also shared ideas about color patterns, lettering and the layout of the school’s gym, such as the colors of the seats and bleachers, as well as the placement of basketball and volleyball courts.

Also discussed was the type of furniture to go in the cafetorium, which will be used for band concerts and other performances.

The 81,000-square-foot high school/middle school on Mahoning Avenue next to the elementary school will house about 500 pupils in grades six through 12. Its estimated cost is $14.5 million.
