Police release identity of woman killed in I-80 crash

Monday, January 26, 2009

HUBBARD — The woman killed on Interstate 80 Sunday evening has been identified as Ann Senchak, 83, of Salt Point, N.Y., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

An earlier report identified her as being from Pennsylvania.

Senchak had been a passenger in an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe . The driver, Kenneth Darby, 61, of Mercer lost control and went off the left side of the road into a ditch just west of the Pennsylvania state line at 6:07 p.m. The vehicle overturned and came to rest on the driver’s side. He and his wife, Deloros, 54, were both taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Senchak, the rear passenger, was ejected from the vehicle and dead at the scene, the patrol said. She was the only occupant not wearing a seat belt. Reports don’t indicate whether she was related to the Darbys.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

A series of wrecks later resulted in the shutdown of a portion of Interstate 80 westbound and eastbound for several hours. Black ice created hazardous road conditions by the truck scales near the Hubbard exit and the Liberty Township line, police said. The roadway was shut down in both directions between those exits from roughly 7 until 9:20 p.m.

The patrol is also investigating a four car crash that happened around 6:15 p.m. in the eastbound lane and injured seven people. None of the injuries was life-threatening, the patrol said. It appears all involved were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
