Jane Austen program focuses on her faith

CANFIELD — “Beyond Hollywood: Jane Austen as a Moralist” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3 and 10 at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road.

Many moviegoers may think of her books primarily as romantic stories. A committed Christian, Austen shows in her books, both directly and indirectly, what constitutes a good marriage, sound character and good behavior. Presenter is Anita Gorman, and donation is $10 per session.

Cleveland uses new format for electronic books

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Public Library has become the first library in the nation to offer a new electronic book format that is becoming an industry standard.

The library is rolling out a format called “epub” that allows patrons to read electronic books on a wider range of devices.

The new format will be available initially on about 140 of the library system’s 24,000 e-book files.

Cleveland e-book seller David Burleigh says the format resizes type to fit different screens and works with PC and Mac computers and the handheld Sony Reader. It doesn’t work with Amazon’s Kindle reader.

Burleigh says the New York and Chicago library systems are among those that will soon begin using the new format.
