Tuesday, January 20, 2009

WOOSTER — Canfield sophomore Gavin Trebilcock set a league record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.87 — more than three seconds faster than his closest competitor — and his older brother Garrett was named the meet’s top male athlete as the Cardinals won their second straight Northeast Aquatic Conference boys team title Monday.

The Cardinals beat second-place Wooster 468-380. Boardman was fourth and Warren Harding fifth in the seven-team competition. Canfield coach Andrea Linnelli was named boys coach of the year for the second straight year.

“It was just phenomenal to watch,” said Linnelli of the team victory. “The boys have worked very hard for this and some of the kids you wouldn’t normally think about really stepped up and did a great job.”

Garrett Trebilcock won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Gavin was second in the 50 free and was a member of the winning 200 free and 200 medley relays.

“Garrett really deserved it,” said Linnelli. “He’s worked very hard. He was a good choice by the coaches.”

Senior Ryan King won the 100 back and senior John Stefanski won the 500 free as the Cardinals finished first or second in 11 of the 12 events, winning eight.

On the girls side, Boardman sophomore Ashley Aldan won the 50 free and 100 back and helped the Spartans win the 200 free relay and place second in the 200 medley relay. Boardman finished fifth, while Canfield was fourth and GlenOak first. Eagles junior Kendra Colby was the female athlete of the year and GlenOak’s Jeff Burrows was the girls coach of the year.
