Squires band tryouts

Squires Warren Junior Military Band will hold tryouts Saturday in Boardman and Warren.

The Boardman auditions will be from 10 a.m. to noon in the Boardman High School band room next to the Performing Arts Center (use performers door 3).

The Warren tryouts will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Academy of Arts & Humanities Auditorium, corner of Elm Road Northeast and High Street Northeast.

Audition materials will be provided by the band. Applicants may also bring their own music.

Book signing at Chevy

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Darryl Tukufu will appear for a book signing of his work “A Guide Toward the Successful Development of African -American Males. The Remix 2nd edition.” The signing will be at the Chevrolet Centre from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. According to a news release from the Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League, the 1997 book was “published to provide guidance and a model for parents, educators, religious institutions, social service agencies, neighborhood groups, fraternal organizations, penal institutions and other organizations that interact with African-American males on ways to inspire them to be successful.” The second edition of the book expands upon and answers readers’ questions from the first installment. Tukufu has appeared on the BET cable network and has been featured in Black Enterprise Magazine. The book will be available for purchase at the event. The cost is $10, with half of the proceeds going toward the Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League. For more information, call the league at (330) 394-4316.

Fatal accident

HUBBARD — One person died and a second is in serious condition after a one-car accident on U.S. Route 62 in Hubbard Township. Alessa Norris, 16, of state Route 7, Hubbard, was pronounced dead at the scene after the car she was riding in struck a metal pole in the median of the highway about 11:15 p.m. Sunday. The driver of the vehicle, Joshua Thompson, 18, of Masury, lost control of the vehicle due to poor road conditions, a police report said. He remains in serious condition at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center. The Warren post of the state patrol is conducting an investigation of the accident. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt.

Murder trial to begin

BRADFORD, Pa. — The trial of a New York state man charged with the shotgun slayings of his parents and a brother is ready to begin in rural northern Pennsylvania. Thirty-two-year-old Steven Colegrove, of Deposit, N.Y., has pleaded not guilty to three counts each of criminal homicide, first-degree murder, second-degree murder and third-degree murder.

The bodies of 60-year-old Joseph Colegrove, 56-year-old Marlene Colegrove and 36-year-old Michael Colegrove were found in their home in Tuscarora Township on Aug. 8, 2007. Bradford County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. They say Steven Colegrove killed the three family members to collect an inheritance. Twelve jurors and three of four alternates have been selected for the trial.
