Liberty, East Palestine post arena victories


YOUNGSTOWN — Bryant Bowman scored 11 points while Floyd Showers and Blair Williams each added 10 to lead the Liberty High boys basketball team to a 47-42 victory over Struthers Monday in an All-American Conference White Tier game at the Chevrolet Centre.

The Leopards (5-6, 1-0) outscored Struthers 24-12 over the second and third quarters to take control.

Nick Jacubec made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and Nate Jacubec added 10 points for the Wildcats (4-7, 0-1).

LaBrae 80, Niles 76

YOUNGSTOWN — Mike Morris scored 23 points, making three of four free throws in overtime as LaBrae rallied to beat Niles.

Cameron Truss added 20 points, including eight in the fourth quarter as LaBrae rallied from a 56-50 deficit after three quarters. Bryan Watkins added 15 points for the Vikings (7-3).

Ryan Frantz scored 26 points, Saul Vaughn had 19 and Cory Floyd 11 for the Red Dragons (4-7).

East Palestine 54, Brookfield 29

YOUNGSTOWN — Ben Gysin scored six of his 19 points in the first quarter as East Palestine took an 18-8 lead. Austin Cope added 10 points for the Bulldogs (9-2).

Gysin had 13 rebounds and senior Matt Greene 11 while junior Austin Cope made nine assists.

Anthony Uberti scored 13 points to lead Brookfield (2-8).

Mineral Ridge 52, Jackson-Milton 42

YOUNGSTOWN — Cody Graham powered his way to 23 points and Zach Kiger added 14 for the Rams (2-8), who outscored the Bluejays 13-3 in the fourth quarter.

Bobby Schnellbach and Jacob Carlile each had 11 points for Jackson-Milton (0-10).

Girls Salem 33, Garaway 28

BERLIN — Amy Scullion scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Quakers (8-1).

Brittney Ritchie scored 10 points in the Classic in the Country Challenge game.

For Garaway, Kenzie Kaufman scored 15 points and made six rebounds.

Mooney 58, Ashtabula Lakeside 47

YOUNGSTOWN — A strong third quarter pushed Mooney’s lead to 19 with senior forward Katie Hughes’ 12 points leading the way as the Cardinals won their fifth straight.

Mooney outscored the Dragons, 21-12, in the third period to take a 44-26 lead before the Cards (6-5) went up by 19 early in the fourth.

Dominique Zordich and Katie Griswold added nine points apiece while Jessica Farragher had eight as part of Mooney’s balanced scoring.

Taylor Pugliese’s 21 points paced Lakeside (1-8).
