Boardman girls, Poland boys come up short at MLK events


BERLIN — Dayton Chaminade-Julienne bolted to a 24-8 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat Boardman High, 46-36, Sunday in the Classic in the Country Challenge.

The game between the traditional powers was part of the annual Martin Luther King weekend showcase, hosted by Hiland High School.

C-J (10-3) shot 52 percent (11-of-21) in the first half and maintained a double-digit halftime lead, 33-22. The Spartans (9-4) shot 55 percent from the field after halftime, but was just 6-of-11. C-J also made six baskets, on 20 attempts, and was able to keep its double-digit lead.

Darryce Moore led the Spartans with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Monica Touvelle added 13 points.

Nicky Disbrow scored 12 points for the Eagles, who were 10-of-22 on 3-pointers. Emily Michael added 11 points, while Samarie Walker finished with five points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Boys

NORTH CANTON — Detroit Country Day, ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today, had too much scoring for Poland, defeating the Bulldogs, 82-53, at the Pizza Oven Classic at Hoover High School.

Country Day (10-0) was led by Donnavan Kirk with 16 points, DaShonte Riley with 11 and Jordan Dumars and Amir Williams with 10 apiece.

For Poland (8-3) Niko Fatimus scored 21 points, while David Baker had five points and seven rebounds. Ben Donlow finished with six points, six assists, and three assists; Luke Wollet had seven points and two steals, and Dom DeFelice had three assists.
