Wounds program slated this week

BOARDMAN — A professional education program, “Wounds: How to Prevent Them, How to Treat Them and How to Keep Them from Coming Back,” is offered from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Church, Westview Drive at U.S. Route 224.

The program, presented by Dr. Joseph Francisco of Ankle & Foot Care Centers and cosponsored by Signature Home Health Services, is free and open to the public. Nurses will receive continuing education credit. Call Chris Tennant at (330) 539-9470.

Ohio fares poorly in tobacco control

COLUMBUS — Ohio ‘s Tobacco Prevention and Control Spending program received an “F” in the American Lung Association’s State of Tobacco Control 2008 report, down from a “C” in last year’s report.

Ohio also received an “F” for cessation coverage and a “C” for the state’s cigarette tax rate in the report. However, thanks to Ohio’s comprehensive indoor smoking law, the state did receive an “A” for smoke free air, the report said.

Alliance auxiliary seeks new members

ALLIANCE — Alliance Community Hospital is having an auxiliary membership drive. Many fund raisers are sponsored by the auxiliary, including uniform, book, jewelry and handbag sales, and the group has published a cookbook.

Members of the auxiliary have the opportunity to serve on the hospital’s Board of Trustees, as well as participate in a variety of committees.

Dues for the organization are $5 a year, and all new members will receive a $5 coupon to be used in the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop or Eatery Snack Shop. To join, call the ACH Volunteer Department at (330) 596-7822.

Therapist to participate in pilot counseling effort

KENT — Susan Wilcox, a licensed therapist, author and expert on “emotional intelligence,” has been selected by the United States Air Force to participate in a new civilian counseling program for active duty pilots and their support teams. She is one of approximately 300 therapists selected nationwide to serve as Military Family Life Consultants.

Their job is to provide private counseling to active duty personnel and their families. Wilcox began her five-month assignment Nov. 28, 2008, at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, and will be at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton from Jan. 29 to March 15.

UPMC unit recruits asthma researcher

PITTSBURGH — The Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has recruited a nationally renowned asthma researcher, Dr. Fernando Holguin, to lead its efforts to identify how environmental risk factors affect asthma in this region and develop new education, prevention and treatment strategies.

The center is funded through a five-year, $5 million grant from the Heinz Endowment in 2007.

Dr. Holguin and his team will identify communities in the region where asthma is most prevalent, and recruit patients in those area in 2009 who are diagnosed with asthma and also screen children to identify previously undiagnosed cases.

Nominations sought

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians is accepting nominations for its annual Friend of Family Medicine award, which recognizes either an elected official or member of the media (individual or organization) who has worked or reported on issues related to family medicine in Ohio.

Any work, articles or broadcasts that represent a nominee’s support of family medicine, must have been completed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008.

YOUNGSTOWN — Drs. Joseph J. Francisco Jr. and Craig Beaudis, podiatric physicians and surgeons with Ankle Foot Care Centers have been designated Certified Wound Specialists by the American Academy of Wound Management.

Scott honored

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Human Services Center gave its Distinguished Service Award for 2008 to Tom Scott, executive director of the Lawrence County Community Action Partnership.
