SCOUTS

Attains rank of Eagle

Brian Cowles was recently honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor by Boy Scout Troop 2 of Poland United Methodist Church.

He became the 83rd member in the troop’s 60-plus year history to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Scoutmaster Rod Emerson presided over the ceremony.

Brian was 7 when he joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Tiger Cub in Cub Scout Pack 2. He earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light award and advanced to Boy Scouts at age 11. He has earned 23 merit badges.

He served Troop 2 in several leadership positions and achieved the ranks of Star Scout, Life Scout and membership in the Order of the Arrow. Brian also has earned the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII religious awards.

His Eagle Scout service project involved the researching, planning and planting of 200 evergreen seedlings to establish a new tree line in the developing Poland Township Park. He worked in cooperation with the township park board, and in particular with Mary Ann Perdulla of Pioneer Trail Tree Farm and Mike Heher, park advisory board chairman.

Brian is a member of Holy Family Church and its youth ministry program. He is a junior at Poland Seminary High School, where he belongs to the Science Club, plays tuba in its wind ensemble and participates on the school’s varsity swimming and cross country teams. He is a member of the Police and Paramedics Explorer Post 27 in Columbiana and a Poland Village police cadet.

He is the son of Orton and Phyllis Fortini Cowles of Poland. His grandparents are Olga and Joseph Fortini of Liberty and Shirley Cowles and Charles Lambert, both of Winter Haven, Fla.
