For Beavers, 19th game’s the charm

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Beaver Local High basketball team finally broke into the win column Thursday night in an All-American Conference Red Tier game.

The Beavers won their first game of the season after losing 18 games in a row, including six in the league, as Travis Lynch scored 24 points and Shawn Mercer 22 to lead a 76-66 victory over Niles.

Lynch had three 3-point goals while Mercer also contributed six rebounds and four assists.

Zack Murray added eight points and six rebounds while Jake Lunders also had six rebounds.

The Beavers also were helped by a 25-for-38 night at the foul line, including Lynch’s 9-for-16.

Ryan Frantz scored 27 points. including six 3-point goals and 5-for-5 from the foul line, to lead NIles (5-14, 1-7).

David Allen added 12 points and Saul Vaughn 11.

Wellsville 69, Leetonia 42

WELLSVILLE — The Tigers improved to 14-5 overall and 9-5 in the Inter Tri-County League Tier Two standings, clinching second place. Leetonia fell to 10-10, 7-7. No other details were reported.
