YOUNGSTOWN — Dyonn L. Perry had 10 bags of marijuana under his shirt when he darted in front of and was struck by an unmarked cruiser traveling 5 mph, police said.

To avoid a traffic stop, Perry, 26, of Tod Lane jumped out of the Ford Explorer he was driving Sunday morning and ran through yards at Rockford Village on the East Side, police said. Detective Sgt. Kevin Mercer followed Perry on foot while Patrolman Patrick Mulligan, in the unmarked cruiser, attempted to get ahead of him by traveling south on Cedar Lane, where Perry ran in front of the vehicle and was hit. Reports show Mulligan had slowed to 5 mph and attempted to stop when Perry darted but the car slid on loose gravel.

Perry was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where X-rays and a CAT scan revealed no injuries, reports show.

Perry was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, driving under suspension and resisting arrest. Police said he had 10 large bags of marijuana under his shirt. He was also cited for failure to signal a turn, the reason for the attempted traffic stop that led to the police pursuit. At the hospital, two more bags of marijuana were found, police said.

Reports show Perry was driving with four open suspensions on his license.

A woman who came out of her Cedar Lane apartment while police were dealing with Perry was charged with obstructing official business. Police said 25-year-old Tracy Beverly yelled profanities at them, which caused a crowd to gather, and continued to be disruptive after being told be quiet and leave.

Court records show Beverly was convicted of theft last month in Boardman, given six months in jail, all suspended, and placed on one year’s probation.
