State EPA public hearing to address proposed waste station in Sebring

staff report

SEBRING — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a public hearing Jan. 13 concerning a proposed waste-unloading station at 12009 Oyster Road.

The station would transfer baled waste from railroad cars into the adjacent Transload America Central Waste landfill.

The information session and public hearing will be at 6 p.m. in the Sebring High School Auditorium, 225 E. Indiana Ave.

The state EPA has issued a draft permit for the rail-transfer station. If a final permit is approved, the proposed facility could accept household garbage, industrial waste and construction and demolition debris, but not asbestos or infectious or hazardous waste.

The current enclosed building would have to be modified before accepting waste, and a spill-containment system would have to be installed, the state EPA said.

An application for an Ohio EPA permit-to-install is still pending for the proposed $250 million Mahoning Renewable Energy plant at that location, which would be a waste-burning electric power plant. A hearing or hearings on that matter will be at a later date, said Mike Settles, the state EPA media relations coordinator.

If that plant is approved, constructed and begins operating, it is possible some of the waste arriving at the rail-transfer station could go to the power plant, Settles added.
