Animals seized

SALEM — About 15 dogs were taken Tuesday from a Salem Township property in a case, more than a year long, involving a man who has not been charged.

The animals have been taken to an undisclosed location for an evaluation.

Jenny Pike, president of the Columbiana County Humane Society, said that multiple efforts were made to help the man provide better care for the animals, to no avail. “It was in the animals’ best interest,” Pike said of the seizure.

Man jailed in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A 28-year-old city man is in the Mahoning County jail on $35,000 bond in the city’s most recent shooting.

Walter Wright, 28, of Verona Avenue, appeared for arraignment Tuesday before Judge Elizabeth Kobly in Youngstown Municipal Court on felonious- assault charges. He is accused of shooting 28-year-old Brian Williams in the chest Sunday outside a Youngstown bar.

Financial seminar set

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Community Church will host Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University to teach participants how to beat debt and build wealth. The 13-week class will take place 7 to 9 p.m. Monday nights from Jan. 4 through March 29 at the church, 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road.

Officer uses Taser gun

CAMPBELL — A police officer used a Taser gun on a man during a foot chase. Police chased Joseph Lightfoot, 18, of Wick Avenue in Youngstown, through woods near Fifth and Wilson avenues at 7:40 p.m. Monday. He got out of his car and ran as an officer tried to pull him over for having only one headlight, the police report said.

An officer told Lightfoot to stop or he would get Tasered. The report said Lightfoot “squared up” against the officer, who hit him with a Taser gun. Lightfoot was taken to the police station and charged with not having a driver’s license, fleeing and eluding, and obstruction of official business. He paid a $650 bond.

Sen. Cafaro to speak

WARREN — State Sen. Capri Cafaro of Hubbard, D-32nd, is the guest speaker when the Trumbull County Federation of Democratic Women meets at 6 p.m. Monday at the Warren SCOPE center, 220 W. Market St. She will talk about senior- citizen rights, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the Trumbull County Health Department and septic systems.

Garbage-pickup delay

WARREN — The Warren Environmental Services Department will be closed Friday for New Year’s Day, which will delay garbage pickup one day for Friday customers only.

Christmas trees can be dropped off in the parking lot of W.D. Packard Music Hall on Mahoning Avenue any time of day or night through Jan. 30. Signs will direct people where to put the trees, but a pile has been started. The Environmental Services Department will grind up the trees Jan. 30.

Christmas tree disposal

HOWLAND — Howland workers will pick up Christmas trees from Monday through Jan. 15. Residents are asked to remove all ornaments and trimmings before placing them curbside. Township residents can also drop off trees from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Jan. 15, Monday through Friday at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road.

Cat-adoption special

WARREN — The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County will have a cat-adoption special in January. All cats will be $50 each or two for $75. The shelter is open 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located at 545 Brunstetter Road S.W., Lordstown.

Temporary road closing

WARREN — A section of North River Road in Warren Township east of North Park Avenue will be closed Jan. 9 and 10 for installation of a sanitary sewer line. Recommended detours involve use of North Park Avenue, Griswold Street, Dietz East Road and Larchmont Avenue.
