Looking beyond a sad ending

The Cincinnati Enquirer: The death early Thursday morning of Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, who fell a day earlier from the back of a pickup truck during an apparent argument with his fiancee, marks the sad end of a short, troubled career.

Some will draw from this news a lesson about talent wasted and opportunities squandered. Others will see the consequences of Henry’s past legal troubles. Others will point out the need to learn how to resolve disputes without anger or rash behavior.

Another message

But there also ought to be a message here that speaks to humility and forgiveness.

Henry had apparently turned a corner in his life after repeated scrapes with the law and suspensions from football.

Bengals owner Mike Brown said Thursday he doesn’t regret having given Henry a second chance, re-signing him several months after the Bengals had released him in 2008. Brown said he sensed something fundamentally good in Henry.

Can there be a more fitting thought for this holiday season?
