Hearing set for woman

BOARDMAN — A Salinas Trail woman accused of robbery at a U.S. Route 224 grocery store is to appear next month in Mahoning County Area Court.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 12 for Eileen Pope, 58, who is charged with robbery and possession of criminal tools. She was in the Mahoning County jail Tuesday.

Police were called about 7 p.m. Monday to Giant Eagle on a report of a woman who had concealed a DVD in her purse, bit a store security officer and fled the store.

Using a vehicle-registration plate, police went to Pope’s home and arrested her.

Prosecutor recuses himself from boy’s case

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) — A newly elected district attorney can’t try a 12-year-old western Pennsylvania boy accused of killing his father’s pregnant fiance .

Atty. Joshua Lamancusa is recusing himself because he gave the boy’s father legal advice shortly after the boy reportedly shot 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houk in February, killing her and her unborn son as she lay in bed.

Lamancusa was elected Lawrence County district attorney in November and takes office Jan. 4.

The state attorney general will now prosecute Jordan Brown, of New Galilee. A Jan. 29 hearing will determine whether the boy will be tried as a juvenile or an adult.

If he’s tried as an adult, Jordan faces up to life in prison. Juvenile court jurisdiction would end when he turns 21.

Rodeo-team members

Leaders of the National High School Rodeo Association in Denver, the oldest youth rodeo program in America, named Sarah Montgomery of Petersburg and Kyle Smith of New Springfield to the Wrangler High School All-Star Road Team.

The two youths earned a position with the corporate- sponsored youth rodeo team based on leadership qualities, academic eligibility and athletic achievements.

Team members receive official competition apparel consisting of two Wrangler Twenty X shirts embroidered with the team logo and two pairs of competition jeans.

Extended hours

POLAND — A McKinley Way drugstore can offer extended hours for Christmas shoppers, village officials have determined.

Walgreens had approached the village about extending by two hours its hours today and tomorrow. The store will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight. After researching the question, Anthony D’Apolito, village solicitor, determined that the agreement limiting the store’s hours to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. was made between the store and the village’s board of zoning appeals, which has the right to alter the agreement.

The board conducted a meeting last week and decided to grant the store’s request, said Council President Joe Mazur, a BZA member.

“We said, ‘No problem,’” Mazur said. “They’re a good neighbor.”

Man pleads innocent

WARREN — James E. Cramer III, 32, of Summit Street Northwest, pleaded innocent Monday in Warren Municipal Court to raping a child at his home Sunday. Police were called to the home Sunday afternoon.

Cramer is being held in the Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond. He returns to court at 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Volunteers needed

CANFIELD — The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers to help plan and organize the Polar Bear Jump.

The date and location for the event have not been confirmed. It will most likely be on a Saturday afternoon sometime between January and March at a frozen lake or pond in Mahoning County.

The Polar Bear Jump gives people of all ages the opportunity to jump into the water of a frozen lake or pond — for a good cause, of course. Some of the ice is cut away and removed for participants to take part. They are asked to raise at least $25 each. Proceeds will be used in the fight against cancer.

To get involved, contact La Dawn Whitman, income- development coordinator of the American Cancer Society, toll free at (888) 227-6446, ext. 2204, or e-mail her at lawdawn.whitman@cancer.org.
