Canfield is what people seek in small town
Nancy Vince
Age: 56
Family: I have been married to my husband Mike for 31 years. We have one son, Patrick, 24 years old. My mom, dad, and brother are also Canfield residents. We are not originally from Canfield, but are certainly here to stay.
Groups: I have been the secretary of the Canfield Athletic Boosters for the past 13 years. I love to attend the high school sporting events both home and away. Sometimes I make a feeble attempt to sub for my brother Dom’s bowling team.
Education: I am a 1971 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and attended Youngstown State University.
Q. What do you like best about living in your town?
A. “Small” towns are priceless, especially ours. This is a community of volunteers, willing to donate their time, talent and assets to those in need. Our neighbors look out for each other. Our police and fire departments are second to none. Our school system is consistently rated “Excellent” and this year “Excellent with Distinction”. I am so proud to be a small part of a talented and caring staff of professionals who bring the best out in our students.
Q. What one thing would you add to your town if money was not an issue?
A. An indoor swimming pool for our community and swim team.
Q. Describe the last community event you went to:
A. The Canfield 4th of July parade is always a crowd pleaser as well as the Canfield Fair. I most recently participated in the “Walk for Diabetes” at the Canfield Fairgrounds. These events bring home families who have moved away and friends we may have not seen for some time.
Q. If there was a store or business to add to your town, which would you like it to be?
A. I would love to see small retail shops in the Square, maybe a small coffee shop where we could sit outside when the weather permits. So many of us are within walking distance of the square and would enjoy a small “gathering place.”
Q. If you could name a street after someone, who would it be?
A. Bill Kay Avenue or Dick Weiss Drive. I have had the pleasure of knowing both of these men who spent the better part of their lives making our community a better place. Bill Kay as a former educator, principal and currently our mayor. It has been said that he “bleeds red and black” (Canfield school colors). Dick Weiss was an educator and athletic director who served for almost 40 years. He expanded his leadership role to the state and local levels of athletics serving on the Northeast Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, and still serves today. These men are true leaders.
Q. Where is your favorite place in town to go for a little hide-away time or bite to eat?
A. Panera Bread. Not only will you be assured of a good meal, but will enjoy it in a relaxed atmosphere, and, you will most likely run into friends and neighbors.
Q. What one place would you direct an outsider to visit to experience your town, and why?
A. I would direct them to The Hampton Inn. Best place to stay! Just look up the events being held at the Canfield Fairgrounds and/or The Square (and there are many) and you are sure to enjoy.
