YOUNGSTOWN — Their programs are meant to restore hope to the community.

Warriors Inc. provides programs for adults and children with that goal in mind, said Wendy Robinson, community-ministry liaison for Warriors.

The nonprofit organization is gearing up for its fall offerings, which include the Warriors of Manhood and Totally You Girl programs.

Both are for youths age 9 to 25.

The Warriors of Manhood program stresses the importance of being men with honor, integrity and character, Robinson said.

The Totally You Girl program builds self-confidence in young women through a focus on the mind, spirit and body, she said.

“We want to accomplish keeping youth involved in programming and activities that will, one, keep them off the streets,” Robinson said. “The second thing is to help broaden their horizons and build confidence and character in themselves.”

Activities planned for this year include wall climbing at Kent State University, a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton and a day at Casal’s De Spa & Salon.

The 13-week course begins Oct. 10 and is every other Saturday. There is no fee.

The Warriors of Manhood and Totally You Girl programs are offered in the fall only. But other programs keep youths involved year-round.

A chess club offers the chance to develop cognitive thinking, while a bike club and spinning classes offer a chance to become physically fit.

Computer and financial-literacy classes are offered for both adults and youths. Warrior’s programs are open to anyone in the Mahoning Valley.

“We have people who come and participate in our computer classes from Poland, Struthers, Warren,” Robinson said, “because it’s an opportunity to learn the basics about computers.”

Volunteering, and giving back to the community, is an important aspect of Warriors’ offerings.

“And that’s how we bring them together,” Robinson said. “You bring youth together with adults, and they both begin to restore the hope in youth and restore the faith in adults that we can work together.”

The goal is to build a better and stronger community, she said.

“And what better way to get youth to care about their community than by getting them involved in their community,” Robinson said.
