WOOSTER — It took 26 hours to complete and plenty of frequent flyer miles were nearly racked up before the Canfield High football team defeated Wooster, 24-21, in Saturday’s completion of Friday’s postponement.
The game began Friday but was postponed in the second quarter by lightning and rain.
“It was a positive experience; we needed the rain delay,” Canfield coach Mike Pavlansky said of the postponement. “We played poorly Friday but we were able to regroup. We played a much better team ball game Saturday.”
Ben Angelo caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Vaclav as the Cardinals forged a 7-7 tie entering the second quarter.
Wooster scored two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 21-10 lead at the break.
Pavlansky said the weather delay afforded his time to shake off their first-game jitters.
“During the break, we realized we had to play at a higher level,” Pavlansky said.
Vaclav ripped off a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter to narrow the score to 21-17.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Canfield scored the game-winning touchdown — a 23-yard scoring pass from Brett Cooper to Will Kelly.
Billy Fisher kicked three conversion points and a 35-yard field goal for the Cardinals.
Vaclav ran 15 times for 103 yards and Cooper completed five of eight for 47 yards.
