Scrappers beat Batavia, 3-0, in home series finale

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers used bunting and pitching to great success on Thursday night, defeating the Batavia Muckdogs, 3-0, in a New York-Penn League baseball game at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers had nine hits in the game — divided evenly between the second, third and fifth innings — when they scored one run each time.

Mahoning Valley (43-23) has won two straight games and nine of its last 11. The Scrappers’ magic number for clinching the Pinckney Division championship is 4.

Marty Popham and Antwonie Hubbard combined on six-hit shutout for the Scrappers.

Popham (6-1, 2.61) pitched the first five innings, allowing four hits. Hubbard allowed two hits over the last four innings.

They combined for 10 strikeouts.

In the second inning, Ben Carlson, who wen 3-for-4 on the night, led off with a single. Chun Chen sacrificed him to second, then Rafael Vera’s RBI single made it 1-0.

In the third, Jason Kipnis led off by reaching on a bunt. Gregory Folgia then sinbled, and both runners moved up on Jesus Brito’s sacrficie.

Carlson then drove in Kipnis with a double to right field, but Folgia was tagged out at the plate.

In the fifth inning, Kipnis ledd off with a single and went to third on Folgia’s single to right. Brito grounded out, moving Folgia to second, and Carlson followed with a RBI sngle to right.

Batavia’s Deryk Hooker (1-5) allowed two runs in four innings to take the loss.

The Scrappers travel to Jamestown tonight for the first of a three-game series.
