Vandalism probe at swim club leads to drug case

STAFF REPORT

BOARDMAN — Investigation into the weekend vandalism of an area swim club led police to charge a man with felony drug possession.

Police were investigating a break-in at the Applewood Swim Club, 850 Teakwood Drive, where vandals did more than $29,000 in damage by dumping various items, including lawn mowers, food and metal bleachers into a pool, according to a police report. They were called to the scene when an area resident discovered a cash drawer in his backyard.

An officer followed the trail of discarded cash register parts and coins to a home on Trotwood Drive, where beer cans matching others found at Applewood Swim Club were strewn around the yard.

Police attempted to contact people in the house but received no response. They discovered that the front door was unlocked and entered to verify that the home had not been vandalized as well.

Police, according to the report, found six men who “all had been drinking,” according to the report.

No arrests have been made in the vandalism swim club.

But while the homeowner’s son, Michael S. Berry, 21, searched for a camera to help police in their investigation of the vandalism at Applewood, an officer noticed a digital scale and a plastic bag of 0.2 ounce of suspected cocaine, according to the report. Police arrested Berry and charged him with felony drug possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
