Oops: Mistake allows man to walk out of Cleveland jail

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities say a man who had just been convicted of rape was able to walk out of a Cleveland jail by pretending to be a detective.

Scott Blazer, wearing a brown suit jacket he had worn in court Monday, told an officer at the booking area that he was a detective and needed to meet his partner at their car. The officer opened two security doors to let Blazer out.

Moments later, the officer realized his mistake and notified a supervisor. Detectives caught up with Blazer about 15 minutes later and brought him back to the Cuyahoga County jail.

The sheriff’s department says the corrections officer who let Blazer out will be disciplined and that they’ll review procedures at the jail.

A jury had convicted Blazer of raping a 15-year-old girl.
