Pa. Senate to try to override governor’s spending vetoes
HARRISBURG (AP) — Pennsylvania state Senate Republican leaders say they will attempt to override some of the spending vetoed by Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell in a seven-week-old partisan budget impasse.
The Senate Republicans said that a session scheduled for Wednesday may include votes on everything from money for rape crisis assistance to food bank aid.
Rendell had a choice to sign a GOP-sponsored budget bill that included funding for the items.
But he vetoed nearly $13 billion for social services, school subsidies and more as a tactic to pressure Republican legislators to agree to allow more money for the programs.
However, Rendell, however, has not shown how to meet rising demand for the state’s social services without a tax increase, and Republicans refuse to agree to any kind of increase.
