Miller to judge WBC title bout

MINERAL RIDGE — Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge has been selected as a judge for Saturday’s World Boxing Council super featherweight championship at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fight between Humberto Soto of Mexico and Benoit Gaudet of Canada is on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton headliner.

The Soto-Gaudet bout will be shown on pay-per-view.

Joe Tabachino national champ

ATLANTA, Ga. — Joe Tabachino, formerly of Canfield, won the 148-pound class at the Ohio tournament of champions national wrestling competition at the Columbus Convention Center recently.

Tabachino’s record in Columbus was 4-0.

Now a 13-year-old seventh-grader in Atlanta, Tabachino previously attended Canfield Middle School through the fifth grade.

In March, Joe Tabachino won a state middle school championship at 155 pounds in Georgia. Joe’s father, Bobby, who played football at Michigan, lives in Atlanta.

Joe’s mother is Susan Milano of Canfield.

Tabachino is also a member of Team Georgia, a traveling wrestling team.

McDonald’s Thomas headed to Lake Erie

McDONALD — Mikey Thomas accepted a full scholarship to attend Lake Erie College, McDonald football coach Dan Williams announced.

Thomas was a first-team All-ITCL Tier Two player, was first-team All-NEO in Div. VI and was second-team all-state.

Thomas is expected to play wide receiver for the Div. II Storm located in Painesville.

Baldwin-Wallace tops Hiram Terriers

BEREA,— The Hiram College baseball team fell shy of Baldwin-Wallace College, 3-2, today With the loss, the Terriers drop to 2-29 overall while the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-17 overall for the season.

In the top of the fourth inning, Hiram tallied the game’s first run that was set up by a triple by sophomore infielder Andy Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local). Richey later scored.

On the mound, sophomore Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) pitched a third of an inning and gave up one hit.

ALLIANCE — Mount Union’s beat John Carroll, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.

’Spirit the Hawk’ grounded for Game 5

ATLANTA — ’Spirit the Hawk’ was back for Game 5. This time, though, the real-life mascot was firmly attached to a trainer’s arm.

The hawk, who got loose during the Game 2 introductions and wound up causing a brief delay, was introduced along with the Atlanta players but wasn’t allowed to take flight.

NBA commissioner David Stern even weighed in on the famous bird of prey, which spends most of its time on display at Zoo Atlanta.

“If you live long enough, you’ll see just about anything,” said Stern.

Olympic champ Bolt in car crash

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt was in a car crash Wednesday in Jamaica, but police and his manager said he was not seriously injured.

Bolt was apparently speeding on a rain-slicked highway when he lost control of the BMW M3 and it went off the road. Police found the car heavily damaged.

Bolt and an unidentified female passenger were taken to the hospital, though neither was seriously hurt.
